The Gunboat 90 was designed to tread the narrow, vaguely defined path of the “performance cruiser.” While the monohull market boasted many successful examples of such designs, the GUNBOAT 90 SUNSHINE was amongst the first to trail-blaze that balance on a cat, and is the largest of the legendary Gunboat fleet at 90’.
A custom stunner and product of elite collaboration, SUNSHINE was built and launched in Cape Town, South Africa by Gunboat International. The interior cabinetry was constructed by Tremont in Canada and shipped to South Africa. The interior textiles were shipped in from various countries by world-renowned Rhoades Young and locally upholstered in Cape Town. Throughout the project, the architects at Morelli-Melvin expanded upon the design brief, continually developing key design variables to meet a sail plan resembling that of a record challenging maxi-cat, complete with a 60 degree rotating, high modulus, wing mast with carbon fiber rigging. Carbon and Nomex honeycomb construction was essential to stay inside the design displacement and to hit the 30+ knot target.
Flow was key to design. Never has handling a mega-cat been so easy. Within two steps of the helm are the sail and anchor controls, as well as the nav station. The indoor-outdoor helm opens up to the forward working cockpit, leaving the aft porch dedicated to relaxation. The spacious open-plan galley (to starboard) and the symmetrical dining area (to port) complement the wing-deck structure for the helm and the saloon forward bulkhead. Living spaces and working quarters are harmonious, yet spacious and private.
Visibility, speed, and adjustable draft realize superior safety and access. The 360 degree view provides excellent visibility whether you’re cooking, helming, navigating, or lounging. Speed is the ultimate safety feature and enables you to sail around storms; or in a storm, with the adjustable daggerboards up, the round bottom hulls will skate sideways along waves and the long high bows offer tremendous reserve buoyancy. Retractable Rudders and daggerboards draw less than two feet of water, and may be partially raised without adverse affect on steering. Imagine the shallow cruising grounds that are now open to explore!
Sunshine is the only Gunboat 90 in existence – a Morrelli & Melvin design that represents the epitome of sailing performance and comfort. Whether it is the spectacular performance, or the sheer comfort and style, SUNSHINE sets the bar for superyacht catamarans.
